PROTOCOL FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF PQRST ADAPTED MEMORY EXERCISE VERSUS DAILY JOURNAL CHECKLIST AMONG DEMENTIA PATIENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background. An estimated 8.8 million Indians older than 60 years have dementia as per
nationwide study. In patients with milder stage of dementia, the interventions could be designed
to improve memory retention and comprehension. PQRST is a strategy that drives individuals
through an ordinated series of steps favoring deep analysis and organization of texts to be learned,
which improves retention. Objectives. To describe a study protocol comparing the effectiveness
of PQRST-adapted memory exercise and daily journal checklist on memory retention and
comprehension among dementia patients. Methodology. Randomized Controlled Trial with
simple random sampling design will be used for the study. Mild to moderate dementia patients
will be assigned to either experimental group (PQRST adapted memory exercise) or comparison
group (daily journal checklist). Expected Results. Improvement in Memory retention and
comprehension on PGI memory scale and self-structured comprehension scale respectively.
Measures will be obtained at baseline, post-intervention and 3-month follow-up. Study
Implications. This research will provide evidence for the potential implementation of PQRST
adapted memory exercise for dementia patients.
