Effectiveness Of Nurse Led Lifestyle Intervention Package On Blood Pressure And Fasting Blood Sugar Among Elderly With Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of diseases causing greater increase to 
morbidities and mortalities among elderly. The early detection of Metabolic Syndrome is 
essential to prevent heart disease among elderly Population. The objective of the study is to 
assess the effectiveness of nurse led lifestyle intervention package on blood pressure and 
fasting blood sugar among elderly with metabolic syndrome.
Methodology: The study was conducted in selected old age home, Chennai. The sample was
selected using purposive sampling technique. Nurse led lifestyle intervention was given for 
experimental group for 4 weeks and control group was given with routine old age home care. 
Post test was conducted after 4 weeks for both the groups. Data will be analyzed using 
descriptive and inferential statistics such as chi square, t test, Mcnemer test.
Results: There was an increase in mean value of Blood Pressure from 41.50 to 60.63 and 
fasting blood sugar from 42.67 to 61.03. The t value 11.20** level for blood pressure and t 
value 10.42** was found to be significant at p <0.05 level for fasting blood sugar.
Conclusion: Engaging in Nurse led lifestyle intervention package is feasible and it showed 
positive effects on blood pressure and fasting blood sugar and reduces the morbidity and 
mortality among elderly.
